To: Michael Taylor Subject: Clicknotes; Dupeless and databases July 4th, 2002 Greetings Michael Taylor **************** Cool Tool! I make backup copies of the web sites I manage on a regular basis. I do this in Front Page by "publishing" the web site from the web to a new folder on my hard drive. This downloads a complete copy of everything on the web server and gives me a fresh start on updating and maintaining the web site. I leave the old web folder as a backup and pick up the task of editing and publishing from the new folder. I can then check links, delete unused or obsolete files and clean up the web before publishing it back to the server. Unfortunately this also adds to duplicate files on my hard drive. Recently I found a cool tool to help clean up duplicate files. This tool works on any drive including network drives to identify duplicate files and provide the opportunity to delete the duplicates. Check it out and download from the PC magazine web site. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,24075,00.asp Dupeless, Version 1.2 Copyright (c) 1998 Ziff-Davis, Inc. Written by Neil J. If you don't know or can't figure it out, then don't touch this tool. ******************* Database Utilities Web site databases are a good way to store and retrieve information from visitors to your web site. A guest book of user names and comments is a simple form of a database where visitors can enter and retrieve information directly from the web site. An other use might be for maintaining a mail list of newsletter subscribers. In order to implement a web database, you'll need to make sure that your web host supports databases and you'll need to do some experimenting in Front Page to figure out how to set up a database. Here are a few articles I found in the MS Knowledge base that walk through the basics. Expanded list of help files and articles about database http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=kb;en-us;Q301986 Download a database web wizard http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=kb;en-us;Q206019 step by step process of setting up a password database: http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q321503 WARNING: before setting up or posting a database on line consider security and the sensitivity of the data you are going to store! Other net travelers can find, download and access your database if you are not careful with security. For example: check out this web site which searches public databases. http://www.searchsystems.net/index.php Personal note: No, I haven't set up a web database yet. I haven't decided it was worth the effort for my little projects. But you can! Have fun! Mike This message was sent to members of Mike's Clicknotes mail list.
