To: mlt@mltweb.com Subject: ClickNotes tip; Outlook holidays December 27, 2002 Greetings Mike Taylor @ Clicknotes and members of the ClickNotes Mailing List. I hope you are having a safe holiday season. As I looked forward to the next year I noticed that my Outlook Calendar was missing holidays. I'm using Outlook 2000 at work and at home. (I know, someday I'll upgrade). In checking with some of the other people around the office I discovered I was not alone. Surprisingly some people had the 2003 holidays, but most of us didn't. To the rescue came a tip from one the online newsletters. It reminded me about how to install Outlook holidays and provided an updated file from Microsoft. If you or your members are using Outlook and are missing the 2003 holidays you can use the following instructions and the file I have posted on the web site to make the update. Important Note. I learned a new trick while playing with this file. Notice that I have added a new country "_Purchasing Functions" to the top of the file. It's easy, just edit the text file. I think it should be obvious when you look at it, but in case you want some detailed instructions check out the Microsoft article listed at the bottom of this message. Here's the best part: You could take this file, edit to add appropriate affiliate programs and meeting dates and distribute to members of your affiliate. Then at least those who are using Outlook, will have all the correct dates on the calendar! TADA! Enjoy, Mike This message was distributed to members of the ClickNotes mailing list. It worked fine for me at work and at home. You may not be so lucky. If you are computer challenged, then just delete this message and don't read any further. Your Outlook calendar may be missing holidays starting in 2003. Take a look and see if you have any 2003 holidays listed. Try finding presidents day in 2003. If yours are missing, here is a way to update the Outlook calendar to include them. Outlook stores holidays in a text file called "Outlook.txt". This file is located on your hard drive somewhere. 1. Quit Outlook. 2. Open Windows Explorer and find the Outlook.txt file on your hard drive. Go to the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 2000\Office\1033" folder. [ If it's not there, search for it using windows explorer.] 3. Rename your original outlook.txt file to outlook.old. 4. Place the new outlook.txt file in that folder. Here is a link to the new file. You will have to save it as a TEXT file to the appropriate location on your hard drive. http://www.mltweb.com/tools/outlook.txt 5. Open Outlook and click the Calendar folder. 6. Go to View > Current View > By Category. You will see all appointments are listed in categories. 7. Click the "Category: Holiday" and delete all the old Holidays. (If you don't delete them all now, all the holidays will be duplicated after you import the new list.) 8. Go to Tools > Option > Click the "Calendar Options" button on the Preference tab. 9. Click the Add Holidays button on the next window. 10 - Select the United States (and any other country you want to add) NOTE: I have added a new country at the top called "_purchasing functions" Click it also to get a few important purchasing functions added to your calendar 11- Once you have made your selection, click the OK button. The new holidays including 2003 will be imported into Outlook. 12. Use the view menu to change the view back to your preference.
