Chairman ISM-Internet Communications Group For the last couple of months we have been talking about some of the different types of IM programs that you can use to communicate on the net. Paul has taken over writing about that subject. So we can tell you about some other areas that may interest you. We decided to combine the months of June, July and August into one newsletter, mainly because so many people are on vacation or attending workshops. Now here is a bit of a twist. I am looking for a job. I was laid off along with my boss, and 50 other people!.. Any way, I have done the usual thing and set up my resume on some of the job banks. But I got an e-mail the other day that looked like it could have some possibilities for a job. Well like any out of work , job hungry person I followed the link, it took me to a page: with a mailto: fill out form, as soon as I got to the page and looked it over , I realized that I was looking at some kind of what we call a "Sham and Scam" type of web site. I already had this thought after I saw the e-mail address that the message came from (From: Human Resources ). I am always leery of any thing I get from Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL, especially if I don't know that person. The reason I call the site I ended up on a "Sham and Scam" site is the mailto fill out form had no link back to the main page, and they want personal information. I did some back tracking and found the so called job site. If you did a search for jobs, you ended up on a real job board, which I thought was kind of strange, until I took a look at what the site called its "Affiliate Program". It appeared that you made money if some one filled out the mailto form and submitted it. The lesson here is don't get in a rush to fill out a form, check out just what it is you actually filling out and make sure you know where it's going. Links of Interest If your thinking about networking your computers, but are not sure where to start then try this link: http://www.homenethelp.com/ It seems like we all use Microsoft Office, here is a link to a free newsletter that you may find useful: http://www.woodyswatch.com/office/ Looking for some good information on Security for you home computer, here is a link to a good article: http://www.informationweek.com/840/langa.htm Want to see an alternative to the Microsoft operating system? This one has Microsoft worried http://www.lindows.com/ MAC is alive I had some time to kill the other day while I was waiting for a prescription for my wife to be filled. So I wondered down to the local thrift store, which was in the same shopping mall. When I used to travel, I always checked out the local thrift stores, mainly because I could almost always find used computer equipment for next to nothing. I found a MAC 7100/80 for $5.00, now this in it self is no big deal, except the MAC I have is an old Performa, and one of the worst the Apple ever made, and I wanted to get something a couple steps above it, mainly because I have a lot of high dollar graphic software that only runs on a MAC and in the past I have used the MAC as a back up for working web sites. I took the machine home and it worked .The machine needed some upgrading so I went to E-Bay and found a bigger hard drive, some video ram and a Ethernet connector. Total coat for the machine is now $35.00. , I am looking for a up grade card make the machine even faster I know there are not a lot of you that use a MAC, but if your thinking about upgrading to a new PC, check out the new MAC's ., you might be amazed at how easy they are to use. ____________________________________________________________________________ __________________ How can I tell if someone I know is signed on at the same time I am? (part 2) By Paul A. Klingler - NAPM Akron Most instant messaging (IM) programs are similar in functionality (see last months article, . We'll attempt to be generic in our tips without promoting one program over another. If you have not yet started using IM it's easy to get started. See the links at the end of this article for some of the more popular programs. So, how can you tell if someone you know is signed on at the same time? Simple! Your desktop display will indicate any users that are signed on (under their specific grouping, Buddies, Co-Workers, Family, etc.) while also indicating those "Off-line". The graphic below indicates that 1 of 5 Buddies are signed on and that one Buddy is 'dwiggle1'. Shown slightly below is an indicator that 7 of 8 are Off-line (Adam, Alex ISM, Angie, etc.). Your program desktop may show something slightly different but they are all similar and all indicate which buddies are active. Links to several of the more popular programs are listed here. Simply 'click' on the link or copy the URL into your browser address window and get started.
